AGRO-ENVIRONMED/Techno-Environmental Platform for the Agro-food Sector in the Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:
creation of a platform sustainable which promotes the transfer of Environmental Technologies and Eco-innovation best practices through the exchange of information and development of joint actions among Mediterranean countries with specially relevant sectors within the agrofood industry
OBJECTIVES:
Main objective of the project is to encourage eco-innovation in companies belonging to the Mediterranean Agro-food Sector, particularly SMEs, by the creation of a platform which promotes the transfer of technologies and best environmental management practices. AGRO-ENVIRONMED involves Regional Authorities, Technology & Innovation Centres, Public Agencies, Entrepreneurs Associations and Research Centres, representing 11 regions and 6 countries within the Mediterranean area
ACTIVITIES:
During this stage, partners in each region have carried out a Regional Characterization, following a scheme structured in three phases:
- General characterization of the production processes and of the regional sub-sector structure
- Identification of environmental issues
- Identification of environmental technologies and good practices in use
The first section provides an overview of the sector at regional level, describing the structure of the regional industry and its economic performance. The second one addresses technical aspects and provides a description of the manufacturing processes, in terms of the constituent process stages and related inputs, outputs and technologies. The final outcome of this analysis is the identification of the process stages/aspects that constitute a major environmental issue in the region. The last one conducts a broad analysis of the most diffused approaches aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the transformation processes.

June 2009-December 2011
The project is scheduled to be executed in 30 months, but the Platform aims at being sustainable beyond the project’s end, ensuring therefore the impact of its results in the long term. In addition, project results will be transferred to a specific relevant agrofood sub-sector in each region, in order to demonstrate the benefits of eco-innovation to achieve a more sustainable Mediterranean space.
