DESCRIPTION:
The PAYS.MED.URBAN Project: high quality of the landscape as a key element in the sustainability and the competitiveness of the Mediterranean urban areas, represents the continuation and the capitalisation of the results and the experiences which were achieved in the PAYS.DOC, INTERREG IIIB MEDOCC project. The project deals with issues relating to the peri-urban and suburban landscape, and it sustains that the elevated quality of the landscape is not only an element of identity and a heritage of natural, ecological and historical-artistic values, but it is also a powerful resource for the economic development and the competitiveness of the urban areas which are in a position to increase both the attractions for tourists and the localisation of industries belonging to new economic sectors. PAYS.MED.URBAN considers the landscape to be a non-transferable territorial “capital”, which is fundamental for sustainable development and for the quality of life in the peri-urban and suburban areas.
OBJECTIVES:
The PAYS.MED.URBAN project put its focus on landscape issues which play an important role in the attractiveness and competitive capacity of urban areas:
1.Existence of sufficient and well managed suburban open spaces, paying special attention to the landscape functions of periuban agriculture.
2.Offer opportunity areas well designed from the landscape point of view for the location of enterprises of the new economy sectors
3.The visual quality of the urban entrances
4.The landscape integration of the new residential areas in the suburban space 5.The visual and ecological quality of the urban fringe and landscape restoration 6.Protection and enhancement of urban images (views)
